NZ National Open
Feather Merchants Fly Tying Championship
Sport Fly Fishng NZ (Inc.) has decided to launch the first NZ National Open Fly Tying Competition to co-incide with the staging of the 28th FIPS-Mouche World Fly Fishing Championships in Rotorua at the Kingsgate Hotel on Sunday March 23, 2008. This event is being sponsored by Feather Merchants and Umqua.
This New Zealand National Open Fly-Tying Competition is designed to showcase the fly tying skills and artistic talents of fly fishers from around the world. This competition is open to all Competitors (team members) registered for the WFFC and all current members of SFFNZ.
Competition Rules and Regulations
The competition will be judged on the tier’s ability to duplicate designated patterns and also their creativity in tying a fly of their own design. His latter fly does not need to be of any known pattern or even be specifically designed to catch a trout.
The pre chosen fly patterns are well known flies from around the world. It will be the tier’s job to duplicate the chosen patterns as close to the original design of the fly as they can. That includes using the exact the same materials and colours as used in the original design.
The flies of their choice needs to be designed to be innovative and able to stand out above the rest. The more original and creative it is, the higher the score will be.
It will be the tiers responsibility to make sure they know the correct materials to be used for each fly and to supply their own if possible. Since it is difficult to bring some feathers and furs into NZ, there will be a wide selection of materials available for the tiers to choose from at the time of the finals. There will also be tools and vices available for those who do not want to bring all their fly tying gear.
Opening Round
Competitors, who wish to enter the competition, must submit the following 3 patterns either at the time of team check in or between 9.00 Friday 21 March to 17.00 on Saturday, 22 March at the Registration Desk at the Kingsgate Hotel, Fenton Street, Rotorua.
The Flies to be submitted for judging in Round 1 are:
Blowfly Humpy size 12,
Cadillac Pheasant Tail size 14
A fly of the competitor’s own personal design.
Round One Judging
All entries will then be judged by an experienced panel of judges. The top 12 individuals will be announced at the Opening Banquet on the Saturday night. They will be invited to participate in a publically viewed final competition which will be held in the Kingsgate Hotel in the Redwood Room on Sunday 23rd March at 1600.
.
Final Round
In the final competition, the competitors will get 60 minutes to complete the following 3 flies:
Royal Coachman Size 14
Gold Bead Olive Woolly Bugger Size 6
A fly of the competitor’s own personal design on any sized hook (but one which could be used in trout fly fishing).
Tiers will deposit their flies randomly into one of the bins available. At the end of the 60 minutes the scrutineers will collect the flies and mount them on uniform cards for judging. They will be displayed anonymously and then judged by the both the panel of judges and also the patrons that are there to watch these magnificent artists. That way all flies will be judged fairly, by both the experts and the everyday person.
The following is how the judging will take place:
The maximum score for each fly will be 30 points and their will be additional (up to 10) points awarded by the viewers to each set of three flies.
Points will be allocated to each of the three flies as follows.
For the two designated flies
Up to 10 points for the neatness and correct proportions of the fly having regard to those of the classic (named) fly
Up to 10 for points for the faithful reproduction of the classic (named) fly having regard to the original materials used, their colour and where they are used in the actual design
Up to 10 points for the aesthetics of the tied fly i.e. how beautifully it is tied
For the angler’s own design of fly
Up to 10 points for the neatness and quality of workmanship in the various aspects of the tied fly
Up to 10 points for the creative use of materials, colours etc
Up to 10 points for the aesthetics of the finished fly i.e. how beautifully it is tied and how elegant it looks
Finally the visitors to the competition will each be invited to vote and award up to 10 points to each finalist’s set of three flies. The points allocated by all people voting will be totalled and divided by the number of votes cast to give an average number of points out of 10 for each finalist. We will use Swedish rounding in calculating the results.
Thus each set of flies can earn a maximum of 100 points.
Judging
After all flies have been judged, the scores of both the judges and the viewers have been tallied, the winner will be announced. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fly tiers. The winning Fly Tier gets bragging rights until at least the next World Championships…
Good luck to all the competitors and we look forward to seeing you all there… |
